We all understand that no human being can survive without water. However, many people do not appreciate the existence of clean water at all. Nearly 80% of factories do not carry out cleaning treatment on wastewater and just dump it into lakes, oceans, or rivers. Of course, the wastewater pollutes the environment and can kill the animals in that environment.
In the end, the polluted water environment will return to humans as a result. There are many people who are poisoned due to using polluted water and this actually happens every year. Currently, the amount of fresh water that can be drunk is less than 1%. This can be a serious problem and humans have to deal with it now before the population increases.
By 2050, it is estimated that the human need for drinking water will increase to a third of the current amount. In fact, some countries that are accustomed to drinking water from the tap still have the potential for contaminants in drinking water, such as lead. copper, and arsenic.
Causes of Water Pollution
There are many sources that can contaminate and can come from illegal or legal disposal of water from a factory. There is a lot of oil spills in pipelines that can disturb water reserves. Some natural disasters in the form of winds, storms, and floods can wash away a lot of garbage which has an impact on water cleanliness.
Most of the waste that is usually washed into the sea is plastic and this waste has been proven to disturb the ecosystem of marine biota as well. There are many fish, turtles, and other animals who accidentally eat the plastic waste. As a result, there are much fish that have died and at least are still alive with the presence of microplastics in their bodies.
Then, humans eat the fish containing of microplastic and this can cause fatal poisoning. Other sources of water pollution can come from roads, housing, and also agricultural fields. When the rain comes, it will wash away a lot of toxic substances from all the sources mentioned earlier. Let’s say oil and hazardous chemicals from paved roads. Then, the agricultural area will contribute to water pollution due to the use of fertilizers, herbicides, and also poisonous pesticides.
Meanwhile, many residential areas contribute to the use of chemicals for house cleaning which is discharged into drains. All the pollution of the water that takes place will end up returning to humans.
Bad Effects of Water Pollution
The first effect that will emerge from discharging polluted water into the environment is wildlife poisoning. Some agricultural waste in the form of fertilizers containing phosphorus and nitrogen can cause algae to grow out of control. As a result, these areas become dead zones for the fish that live in these waters. Because algae cause the oxygen content in the water to decrease. Meanwhile, an explosion in the number of algae can cause serious problems for humans which can cause skin irritation and itching.
